The tenth coin in the "Birds of Canada" series features the striking, golden-yellow evening grosbeak. This is a melodious bird with bright plumage and a surprising ability to hide among the deciduous and coniferous trees it inhabits. The color combined with the precise finish of the coin creates a unique keepsake. The limited series is only 20,000 pieces worldwide.
Designed by Canadian artist Arnold Nogy, this beautiful painted coin on the reverse features a golden-feathered male evening grosbeak happily perched on a red-leaved, snow-covered branch. The inscription CANADA, the denomination, and the year of minting – 2012 – are also visible.
The obverse features the image of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
The evening grosbeak is an impressive bird inhabiting areas of Canada. Its name comes from its characteristic, strong beak, which resembles a cone. The upper layer of the grosbeak's plumage is in bright colors, making it easily recognizable in the forested areas of Canada. Males of this species are distinguished by intensely yellow plumage on the head, back, and wings, while females have more subdued colors. This bird mainly inhabits coniferous and mixed forests, particularly occupying mountainous and taiga areas. The evening grosbeak usually forms flock groups, especially during the winter season when it moves in search of food. Its diet includes conifer seeds, as well as fruits and buds. A characteristic feature of the grosbeak is also its melodious song, which fills the surroundings during the mating season.
With Canada's growing independence from Great Britain, the need for minting its own coins also increased. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To this day, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.
