Appearance of 2012 25c Rose-Breasted Grosbeak - Coloured Coin - 24h Shipping!

This colorful, engraved coin features on its reverse a male rose-breasted grosbeak perched delicately on a maple branch. It has beautiful plumage, a black head, brown wing feathers, and a red-and-white breast. Looking at the image, one may get the impression that the bird is posing for a photograph.

The obverse of the coin, as with other coins in this series, bears the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Historical background

The rose-breasted grosbeak is a songbird belonging to the cardinal family. Males stand out with bold black, white, and bright pink coloration. Females have a distinctive white “eyebrow” and a double wing bar and are often mistaken for large sparrows. Both males and females have thick, pale bills. These birds winter in central Mexico and northern South America, then return to their Canadian forests as the days grow longer. They quickly build their delicate nests then, favoring the nooks of maples. They feed mainly on insects in the tree canopies, but also on seeds, buds, and fruit. At the end of August, these birds set off south again.

Manufacturer

With Canada’s growing independence from the United Kingdom, the need to mint its own coins also increased. Therefore, in 1908 the Royal Canadian Mint was established, and since then it has become one of the most important mints in the world. To this day, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.

The Mint’s shares are held in trust on behalf of the Crown of Canada.

The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and designs and manufactures collector coins from precious metals, gold, silver, palladium and platinum bullion coins, medals, as well as medallions and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.

Today the Royal Canadian Mint sets standards in minting technology and numismatic design, attesting to its standing and reputation.
