This is the second coin in the popular Ducks of Canada series. This time it features aix sponsa, commonly known as the wood duck. Some experts consider this species to be a representative of the most beautiful waterfowl found in North America. The coin commemorates the 75th anniversary of Ducks Unlimited Canada.

The limited series consists of only 17,500 pieces worldwide.

Appearance of the 2013 Canada 25C Coloured Coin - Wood Duck - 24h Shipping!

The coin, designed by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant, features a colorful image of a pair of wood ducks during nesting on the reverse. In the central point, a male is visible sitting on a tree branch. His bright eyes attract attention, and the bird's colorful plumage is captivating. Directly behind him, on the same branch, is the female. She has characteristic white rings around her eyes, an indigo-colored beak, and a chestnut-brown body and sides. The reverse of the coin also includes engraved inscriptions CANADA, the year of minting, and the denomination.

The obverse features the image of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Historical Background

The Latin name of the duck, aix sponsa, means a bird in wedding attire. The wood duck, reaching a length of about 46-56 centimeters, is distinguished by its colorful and elegant plumage, which attracts the attention of nature observers.

The male of this duck presents itself exceptionally impressively. Its head is adorned with intense green, and the characteristic, shiny patch on the wing is an elegant element. An unusual accent is also the reddish ring around the eye, which adds unique charm. Some feathers are white, and the rest of the plumage is in shades of blue, turquoise, and brown, making the wood duck appear as a masterpiece of nature.

The female, although less impressive, has its own charm. Her feathers are mainly in shades of brown, with delicate spots on the sides. Her "mask" on the face, usually in shades of brown with a white border around the eyes, is also characteristic.

The wood duck primarily inhabits water zones with lush vegetation, where it easily finds food. Its presence in the aquatic environment is an extraordinary attraction for nature lovers, admiring both its colorful plumage and elegant behavior on the water.

Manufacturer

With Canada's growing independence from Great Britain, the need for minting its own coins also increased. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To this day, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.

The Mint's shares are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.

The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and is involved in designing and manufacturing collector coins from precious metals - gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, as well as medallions and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.

Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets standards in the field of minting technology and numismatic design, which attests to its position and reputation.
