Appearance of the Queen's Beasts Silver Coin: White Horse 2 ounces
The reverse of the coin features the White Horse of Hanover. The statue-like figure from Westminster refers to the King of Great Britain and Ireland, the first of the Hanoverian dynasty – George I. He was crowned in 1714 at Westminster Abbey and reigned until 1727. The central part of the coin features the horse, captured in motion. It holds under its hooves the coat of arms of the rulers of Great Britain and Hanover. The animal is set against a beautiful background. Around the Horse, the inscription WHITE HORSE OF HANOVER is placed, along with the coin's minting date, fineness, and weight of the metal. The reverse also includes the initials of the coin's designer – Jody Clark.
The obverse of the coin is designed by the same designer. In the center is the likeness of the Queen of Great Britain – Elizabeth II. Around it is the inscription Elizabeth II and the abbreviation D. G. Reg. F. D., which expands to Dei Gratia Regina, Fidei Defensor - meaning in Polish, Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith. There is also information about the nominal value of the coin and the designer's initials.
Historical Background
On June 2, 1953, Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at Westminster Abbey. On this occasion, ten heraldic statues were placed in front of the entrance to the Abbey. They were designed by James Woodford. Each of them refers to figures or places historically important to the royal family. The statues were named the Queen's Beasts and to this day proudly guard the entrance to the Abbey.
Since 2016, The Royal Mint has been minting coins featuring the statues from Westminster Abbey. The series is called the Queen's Beasts.
