HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

On June 2, 1953, Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at Westminster Abbey. On this occasion, ten heraldic statues were placed at the entrance to the Abbey. They were designed by James Woodford. Each of them refers to figures or places historically important to the royal family. The statues were named the Queen's Beasts and to this day proudly guard the entrance to the Abbey.

Since 2016, The Royal Mint has been minting coins with images of the statues from Westminster Abbey. The series is called the Queen's Beasts.

APPEARANCE OF THE COIN

The reverse of the coin features the White Lion of Mortimer, symbolizing one of the statues from Westminster. In the central part of the coin, the lion is placed, facing left and captured in the moment of roaring. In its right paw, a coat of arms is placed. Around the lion, we see the inscription: WHITE LION OF MORTIMER, as well as the date of minting, the fineness, and the weight of the metal. The reverse also includes the initials of the coin's designer – Jody Clark.

The obverse of the coin is designed by the same designer. In the center, there is a likeness of the Queen of Great Britain – Elizabeth II. Around it, there is the inscription Elizabeth II and the abbreviation D. G. Reg. F. D., which expands to Dei Gratia Regina, Fidei Defensor - which in Polish means Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith. There is also information about the nominal value of the coin and the designer's initials.
