It is a collector's coin in a proof mirror version. Its mintage is 18,700 pieces. Mirror coins differ from traditional bullion coins with a perfectly shiny, mirror-like surface on the obverse and reverse. Additionally, each coin is packaged in a special case and capsule, emphasizing their highest mint quality.

The obverse of the coin features a stylized fragment of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. To the left of the dome is the image of an eagle, in accordance with the Polish emblem, and to the right is the denomination. The edge of the coin bears the inscription RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA and the year of issue. Under the eagle's left paw is the mint mark. The reverse of the coin depicts a profile portrait of John Paul II, facing a visible fragment of the baptismal font from the Minor Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wadowice. Above the portrait is the inscription JAN PAWEŁ II, while at the bottom of the coin are the dates 1920-2005, commemorating the pope's life. The design is by Urszula Walerzak.
