The Williamson Diamond Brooch is one of the most unique jewels in the British royal family's collection, combining rarity, history, and jewelry craftsmanship. Its history dates back to October 1947, when an extremely rare 54.5-carat pink diamond was discovered at the Mwadui mine in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), owned by Canadian geologist and royalist Dr. John Thorburn Williamson. In November of the same year, Williamson gifted the uncut stone to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding present.
In March 1948, Princess Elizabeth, along with Queen Mary, visited the London jewelry firm Briefel and Lemer, where they observed the diamond cutting process. The stone was transformed into a 23.6-carat brilliant-cut diamond, highlighting its intense pink color. In 1953, already as queen, Elizabeth II commissioned Cartier to set the diamond in a daffodil-shaped brooch. The design by Frederick Mew also used 170 small brilliant-cut diamonds, 12 baguette-cut diamonds, and 21 marquise-cut diamonds that Williamson added to the main stone. The brooch quickly became one of Queen Elizabeth II's favorite jewels.
In 2025, the Royal Canadian Mint commemorated this exceptional jewel by issuing a gold coin from the Crown Jewels series, adorned with pink tourmaline and diamonds, inspired by the Williamson Diamond Brooch. This coin pays tribute to royal history and jewelry mastery, combining Canadian heritage with royal splendor.
