Appearance of the Gold Coin Year of the Dragon 1/2 oz 2024
The reverse of the coin features a carefully engraved Chinese dragon. The elements adorning this image include stylized mists and waves in the background. Also visible are the Chinese character for dragon and the inscription DRAGON 2024. The mint's P125 mark denotes the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint.
The obverse displays the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is complemented by the dates of her reign (1952-2022), as well as the weight, purity, and denomination. It was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
Historical Background
The Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar. It is divided into 60-year cycles, consisting of years assigned to 12 animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig), occurring in 5 elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). The year 2024 will belong to the Wood Dragon and will begin on February 10. Here are some interesting facts about the Chinese New Year.
• The holiday was a solemn period of prayers to the gods for abundant harvests. People also prayed to their ancestors, whom they considered gods.
• The Chinese New Year poses a significant challenge for public transport operators. It is a time when family gatherings are the most important element. Many young people travel from cities to their hometowns, and in such a densely populated country, this causes considerable traffic disruption.
• On New Year's Day, according to superstition, one should not take a shower, as it may wash away good luck.
• The color red dominates during the 15 days of celebrations, with almost all decorations featuring red elements.
The Wood Dragon sign characterizes intelligent and creative people, yet they are distinguished by sensitivity and stubbornness. When hurt, they lose their optimistic outlook. The previous Wood Dragon year was celebrated 60 years earlier—in 1964. Famous people born that year include Keanu Reeves, Russell Crowe, Lenny Kravitz, and Sandra Bullock.
