This is the third in a series of $100 coins made of pure gold. It was minted to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Dragon (2024), and the entire series refers to the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac. It is a highly collectible coin, minted in a limited quantity of only 1,888 pieces. The Lunar Year of the Dragon coin is placed in a red lacquered wooden box, reminiscent of the Chinese New Year custom of giving "lucky money" in a red envelope.
The reverse was designed by artist Simon Ng, inspired by traditional Chinese art forms. The coin depicts the Wood Dragon chasing the Dragon Pearl, or Fireball, which represents wisdom and prosperity. Cherry blossoms, a symbol of good fortune, are depicted on and around the dragon. Stylized waves can be seen in the background. The reverse also features engravings of the word CANADA, the Chinese character for dragon 龍, and the year 2024.
The obverse features the image of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Four pearls symbolize the four portraits of the monarch that have adorned Canadian coins.
