Gwardia's cheese were an elite unit created in 1807 on the initiative of the Prince Józef Poniatowski. Powered mainly by Poles, the regiment became part of the personal guard of Emperor Napoleon and took part in the most important campaigns of the Napoleonic era. Their courage, training and loyalty gained recognition not only Napoleon himself, but also European war chroniclers. They were particularly memorized thanks to the engraver charging under Somosier in 1808 - an event that was permanently enrolled in the National Matarian Mitology as a symbol of Polish heroism and determination.
The release of this coin aimed to not only commemorate the cheese as soldiers, but also their role in building Polish historical consciousness and military tradition.
