An exceptional, collectible coin issued by the National Bank of Poland to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the martyrdom of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, chaplain of Warsaw's "Solidarity," a defender of human rights in the People's Republic of Poland, murdered in 1984.
This coin has a nominal value of 37 Zlotys, symbolizing the years of the clergyman's life. It was issued in 2009, made of 900 fine gold, weighing 1.70 grams.
The gold coin, struck with a proof finish and a smooth edge, is carefully packaged in the original, elegant NBP case along with a certificate.
APPEARANCE OF THE COIN
The reverse of the coin features crosses and hands holding them. Below them is the inscription: "OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD." The edge bears the signature "FR. JERZY POPIEŁUSZKO 1947–1984."
The obverse features a large number 37 accompanied by the words "years lived" against a background of rippling water. It also includes the image of the eagle established for the emblem of the Republic of Poland and the inscription "RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA 2009," as well as the mint mark: "M/W."
