Description of the 2024 1/10 oz Polar Bear Gold Coin
The coin continues the story presented on the first bullion coin from this series in 2022 and also depicts a tender scene of a polar bear and her nearly independent cub in their natural environment. Each investment coin is made of 24-karat gold with a fineness of 999 and a minimum guaranteed weight of 1/10 ounce.
Appearance of the 2024 1/10 oz Polar Bear Gold Coin
The reverse design by Canadian artist W. Allan Hancock shows a polar bear (Ursus maritimus) and her almost independent cub, snuggling in their Arctic habitat. This scene, enriched with paw prints that reference the theme, is set against stylized sun rays. The purity and weight of the coin, as well as the inscription CANADA and the year 2024, are engraved along the outer edge.
The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, surrounded by sun rays, designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
Historical Background
Polar bear cubs stay with their mother for the first two or three years of their life. When they venture out on their own and become independent, these individuals must face many challenges, still honing their hunting skills. Survival rates improve as they reach maturity and are ready to reproduce—around the fourth to sixth year of life for females, while the best reproductive years for males begin around their tenth year.
Earlier, the cubs are under the careful watch of their mother and learn basic skills from her that they will later use in adult life.
Producer
With Canada's growing independence from Great Britain, the need to mint its own coins also increased. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To this day, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.
The Mint's shares are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.
The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and is engaged in designing and crafting collectible coins made of precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, as well as medallions and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services. Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets standards in the fields of minting technology and numismatic design, which reflects its standing and reputation.
