The Krugerrand has been produced continuously since 1967. The coin's name comes from the surname "Kruger" and the word "rand," which is the name of the South African currency.
Krugerrand has legal tender status in South Africa, which allows it to be imported into many countries without the need to pay taxes. Initially, the coin was produced in one size, containing one ounce of gold. In 1980, versions containing half, quarter, and tenth of an ounce of pure gold were introduced.
What does the Krugerrand 1/10 oz gold coin look like?
The Krugerrand was designed by South African sculptor Coert Steynberg. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of the President of the Transvaal, Paul Kruger. The rim contains the words "South Africa" in Afrikaans and English.
On the reverse of the coin, we see a springbok antelope, one of the national symbols of South Africa. On both sides of it are numbers representing the year of minting. Below is the inscription "Fyngoud 1/10 oz fine gold," indicating the pure gold content.
