The Gold Krugerrand is the most well-known bullion coin in the world. Produced by the South African national mint, the coin is made from an alloy of 916.6 fineness, which gives it exceptional scratch resistance. The Krugerrand is also distinguished by its liquidity, allowing for immediate resale of the coin regardless of market conditions.
The coin's manufacturer - Rand Refinery - is the world's largest single-site precious metals production and processing complex. Since 1920, it has been involved in refining, smelting, and recovery of precious metals. It produces products for investment, industrial, and trade purposes, as well as luxury goods.
History of the Krugerrand
With large reserves of precious metal, the South African Chamber of Mines proposed the idea of creating the world's first gold investment coin. The Krugerrand has been produced continuously since 1967. The coin's name comes from the surname "Kruger" and the word "rand," which is the name of the South African currency.
Krugerrand has legal tender status in South Africa, which allows it to be imported into many countries without the need to pay taxes. Initially, the coin was produced in one size, containing one ounce of gold. In 1980, versions containing half, quarter, and tenth of an ounce of pure gold were introduced.
What does the Krugerrand 1/10 oz gold coin look like?
The Krugerrand was designed by South African sculptor Coert Steynberg. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of the President of the Transvaal, Paul Kruger. The rim contains the words "South Africa" in Afrikaans and English.
On the reverse of the coin, we see a springbok antelope, one of the national symbols of South Africa. On both sides of it are numbers representing the year of minting. Below is the inscription "Fyngoud 1/10 oz fine gold," indicating the pure gold content. Thanks to the addition of copper, the coin is more resistant to scratches and also stands out with its unusual color.
Due to the long-standing, unwavering trend of buying this exceptional coin, the Treasury Mint offers it in its assortment.
