The collector's coin, with an original shape, was issued by the National Bank of Poland on the occasion of the UEFA EURO 2012 European Football Championship, hosted by Poland and Ukraine. The issuance of this coin aimed to commemorate one of the most important sporting events in modern Polish history and to highlight the significance of the tournament for infrastructure development and the promotion of the country on the international stage. EURO 2012 was the first such prestigious football tournament organized in Central and Eastern Europe, marking a breakthrough moment for both Polish sports and international cooperation. This coin is not only a valuable collector's item but also a historical and cultural memento, referring to communal emotions and the spirit of sports rivalry.
The collector's edition consists of four unique coins that together form a cohesive composition inspired by football themes and the symbolism of the European Championship. The reverse sides of the coins depict a dynamic football scene, enhanced by lines that amplify the impression of movement and energy. Around the main motif, characteristic symbols of Polish cities are placed, such as the Warsaw mermaid or the Poznań goats. One of the coins also features the official UEFA EURO 2012™ logo, combining football and floral elements, symbolizing the cooperation between Poland and Ukraine, the co-hosts of the tournament. The obverse sides present a match scene from a different perspective, with a football in the central frame. The design is maintained in a modern, dynamic style that perfectly captures the spirit of sports rivalry and the atmosphere of a great football celebration. The whole is complemented by the image of the eagle – the emblem of the Republic of Poland, along with the name of the country, the year of issue, and the denomination.
UEFA EURO 2012 was a groundbreaking event in the history of Polish sports and one of the largest organizational undertakings Poland embarked on after 1989. The decision to grant Poland and Ukraine the right to jointly organize the European Football Championship was made on April 18, 2007, during a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee in Cardiff. It was a great honor and at the same time an impetus for the intensive development of sports, road, hotel, and communication infrastructure in both countries. The tournament took place from June 8 to July 1, 2012, with matches in Poland held in four cities: Warsaw, Gdańsk, Poznań, and Wrocław. EURO 2012 had enormous significance not only in sports but also socially and promotionally. It allowed Poland to be showcased as a modern, dynamically developing country ready to host world-scale events.
On the occasion of this unique moment, the National Bank of Poland introduced a series of collector's and commemorative coins into circulation, including a silver coin with a denomination of 10 PLN. Its issuance was intended to commemorate the historic event and honor the organizational effort and sports emotions that accompanied the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament.
