Appearance of the Under the Sea: Sea Turtle - Pure Silver Coin - 24h Shipping!
The coin's design by Canadian artist Maurice Gervais depicts an underwater landscape off the coast of Canada, showcasing the diversity of marine life. The coin is enhanced with a unique glass element in the shape of a sea turtle, handcrafted by Canadian glass artist Loïc Beaumont-Tremblay. This technique, known as murrini mosaic, involves arranging and fusing multicolored glass rods to create a detailed pattern. Each of these elements is unique, making the coin a one-of-a-kind work of art. The obverse of the coin features the image of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt. It is not only a valuable acquisition for collectors but also an expression of appreciation for the richness of Canadian marine ecosystems and their unique inhabitants.
Historical Background
The coin is the third and final issue in the Underwater World series. It aimed to showcase the richness of Canadian marine fauna and an innovative approach to minting art. The series began in 2016 with a coin depicting a seahorse, followed by a starfish coin in 2017. Each coin included a handcrafted glass ornament in the murrini mosaic technique, depicting the respective marine creature.
The sea turtle coin was designed by Canadian artist Maurice Gervais and depicts the underwater world off the coast of Canada with colorful corals, marine vegetation, and rocks. The series to which it belongs was the first of its kind initiative by The Royal Canadian Mint, combining traditional minting techniques with handcrafted glass art, making each coin unique and attractive to collectors as well as nature and art enthusiasts.
Manufacturer
With Canada's growing independence from the United Kingdom, the need for minting its own coins also increased. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To this day, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.
The Mint's shares are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.
The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and is involved in designing and manufacturing collector coins from precious metals - gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, as well as medallions and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.
Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets standards in the field of minting technology and numismatic design, which attests to its position and reputation.
