Description of the silver coin Animals of the World: Eagle‑Owl
The collector's coin featuring the image of the eagle-owl was issued by the National Bank of Poland on March 15, 2005, as the eleventh coin in the Animals of the World series. This series aims to present animal species threatened with extinction due to civilizational and cultural changes. The eagle-owl is the largest owl found in Poland, characterized by its impressive appearance with orange irises and ear-like tufts. Unfortunately, it is an endangered species, whose population in Poland has significantly decreased over the last century due to human activity. This coin is not only a valuable collector's item but also a reminder of the necessity to protect this majestic bird and its natural habitat.
Appearance of the silver coin Animals of the World: Eagle‑Owl
One of the most symbolic issues of the series. The reverse of the coin depicts a majestic eagle-owl, proudly sitting on a pine branch, with a nest and three chicks at its feet. The composition shows a scene from the life of this nocturnal predator in its natural environment. The characteristic features of the species are rendered with great precision: expressive, piercing eyes, a massive silhouette, and feathered "ears" that give the bird its distinctive appearance. In the upper part of the reverse, there is the inscription PUCHACZ – Bubo bubo. The obverse of the coin, in accordance with the statutory design, contains the emblem of the Republic of Poland, with the national flag placed on its sides, which is a rare and interesting graphic accent. It also includes information about the year and country of issue, as well as the denomination. The design combines high artistic value with a subtle educational message, serving as a tribute to one of the most beautiful representatives of Polish fauna.
Historical Background
The issue featuring the eagle-owl is the eleventh part of the Animals of the World series. This series, initiated in 1993, aimed to present various animal species, with particular emphasis on those threatened with extinction. The eagle-owl (Latin: Bubo bubo) is the largest owl living in Poland and one of the largest in the world. This impressive bird of prey is currently among the protected species, whose numbers have significantly declined due to human activity. Featuring its image on the coin is an expression of appreciation for its role in nature and symbolically emphasizes the need to protect native biodiversity and natural habitats.
The coin's design was developed by two renowned Polish artists. The reverse, depicting an adult eagle-owl watching over three chicks in a nest on a pine branch, was designed by Andrzej Nowakowski. This composition captures both the majesty of the adult bird and the fragile family bond among these extraordinary birds. The obverse, with the emblem of the Republic of Poland and compositional elements typical of the series, was created by Ewa Tyc-Karpińska. This coin is not only a valuable numismatic asset but also a reminder of the responsibility we bear as a society for the protection of Polish nature.
