The ship participated in a battle with the German raider KORMORAN, and the entire crew of SYDNEY II perished in the Indian Ocean in 1941. This commemorative coin was struck from pure silver with a fineness of 0.999 and issued as legal tender in Australia.

The reverse of the coin features an image of HMAS Sydney II, a modified Leander-class cruiser weighing 6,830 tons, noted for its outstanding combat achievements. Below the image of the ship is the inscription HMAS SYDNEY II 19 NOVEMBER 1941 ~ 16 MARCH 2008, highlighting the 67-year period it lay undiscovered on the seabed. Additionally, the reverse includes the Perth Mint's mintmark P. The obverse of the coin depicts the image of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Ian Rank-Broadley.
