The Silver Proof Coin – History of Polish Coinage Series: Florin of Władysław the Lokietek - 24h Shipping!, with a denomination of 20 złotych, is a unique element of the "History of Polish Coinage" series. Issued by the National Bank of Poland in March 2015, it commemorates the first gold coin in Polish history – the florin of Władysław the Lokietek from 1330.

Historical significance of the florin of Władysław the Lokietek

The florin of Władysław the Lokietek, minted in 1330, is considered the first gold coin in Polish history. Its issuance was associated with a double indulgence in honor of St. Stanislaus, established by Pope John XXII. The faithful, wishing to obtain the indulgence, offered two foreign gold coins, which allowed for the collection of the bullion necessary to mint the florin. This coin played a significant role in financing military actions against the Teutonic Knights. To this day, only one specimen of this coin has survived, kept in the National Museum in Krakow.

Obverse and reverse of the coin

The obverse of the coin features a stylized image of the obverse of a contemporary 20-złoty coin. On the left side is the reverse of the original florin of Władysław the Lokietek, depicting St. Stanislaus with a mitre on his head and a crosier in his hand. In the background is a portrait of Władysław the Lokietek taken from his tomb sculpture in the Wawel Cathedral.

The reverse of the coin shows the obverse of the florin of Władysław the Lokietek, depicting the king sitting on a throne with a crown on his head, a lily scepter in one hand, and an orb in the other. In the background is a seal with an analogous image of the ruler. Along the rim on the right side is the inscription: "FLOREN WŁADYSŁAWA ŁOKIETKA".
