Description of the Silver Coin Coronation of King Charles III 2024

This special edition silver dollar was created to commemorate the first anniversary of the coronation of King Charles III. This event was a milestone in the history of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms that recognize the British monarch as their own head of state. It also resonated deeply with Canadians themselves.

This was the first coronation of a Canadian head of state in nearly seventy years. It gave subjects insight into a ceremony steeped in continuity, tradition, and duty.

The numismatic masterpiece features the official portrait of His Majesty in full regalia, capturing the majesty of Coronation Day. It is a valuable memento that commemorates not only a key event in the history of Canada and 14 other countries but also testifies to the enduring legacy of the monarchy.

Appearance of the Silver Coin Coronation of King Charles III 2024

The reverse of the coin bears the portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, reproduced in full color. It was captured by British photographer Hugo Burnand. The portrait depicts His Majesty in official coronation regalia. He is seated on a majestic throne, with finely engraved maple leaves in the background. The sovereign is wearing the dazzling Imperial State Crown and the Robe of Estate, and holds the symbols of power and sovereignty: the Sovereign's Orb and the Sceptre with Cross.

The obverse of the coin features an elegant effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, rendered by Canadian artist Steven Rosati. This likeness conveys the dignity and grace of the monarch, adding royal splendor and class to the coin's design.

Historical Background

For the first time in the mint's history, His Majesty King Charles III, King of Canada and 14 other countries, appears on both the obverse and reverse of the coin in prominent positions. The special edition commemorates the first anniversary of the coronation, a historic event that took place on May 6, 2023. It marked the beginning of a new era in the British monarchy. This was the first coronation in nearly seven decades, following the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Charles III, the British monarch, is recognized as head of state by 15 sovereign countries. Besides the United Kingdom, these are countries that were formerly part of the British colonial empire: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, Canada, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tuvalu, and Solomon Islands.

Nineteen other countries that gained independence from the United Kingdom also once held Commonwealth realm status but later adopted a republican system of government. These included, among others, Ghana, India, Malta, Nigeria, and Pakistan.

The coin features the official portrait of His Majesty in full regalia, capturing the majesty of Coronation Day. It is a valuable piece in any collection, honoring the enduring legacy of the monarchy in this country.

Manufacturer

With Canada's growing independence from the United Kingdom, the need to mint its own coins also increased. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To this day, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.

The Mint's shares are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.

The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and is involved in designing and crafting collector coins from precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, as well as medallions and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.

Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets standards in minting technology and numismatic design, reflecting its standing and reputation.
