Appearance of the Silver Kangaroo Yongka Coin

This amazing silver coin is inspired by nature.

The reverse of the coin depicts a kangaroo (yongka) running through green grass and ochre boodja rocks, against the backdrop of the earthy colors of the indigenous lands of Australia. Above its head is the evening sky, represented by turquoise, blue, and black dots symbolizing stars.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the nominal value, year of minting, coin composition, and the inscription: “Elizabeth II 1952 – 2022”.

Historical Background

This coin is the work of Aboriginal artist Kevin Bynder, a member of the Whadjuk-Yuet-Ballardong tribe. Kevin's works are inspired by the natural environment of Western Australia, focusing on the history and knowledge of the indigenous people of these lands.

The kangaroo, as one of the fundamental themes of Aboriginal art, has been present in it for millennia. The oldest piece of Australian rock art is a 17,000-year-old painting depicting a kangaroo located in the northwestern Kimberley region. It is this tradition that inspired Kevin Bynder in creating the coin.
