Description of the 200 zloty gold coin 160th anniversary of the January Uprising 2023

The gold coin is characterized by a meticulously crafted design. It commemorates the 160th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprising — one of the most important independence movements in Polish history. The uprising, which began on January 22, 1863, was the Polish nation's response to the brutal partition policy of the Russian Empire and the pursuit of regaining sovereignty. Although it ended in military defeat, it remains etched in Polish memory as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the relentless fight for national freedom and dignity. The coin issued on this occasion pays tribute to the heroes of the uprising and serves as a reminder of the significance of independence in Poland's history.

Appearance of the 200 zloty gold coin 160th anniversary of the January Uprising 2023

The numismatic piece combines historical symbolism with a modern numismatic style. The reverse of the coin features the historical insurgent coat of arms from 1863. Its shield contains three symbols: the Eagle – symbolizing the Kingdom of Poland, the Pahonia – depicting a rider on horseback with a sword, symbol of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and Archangel Michael – symbolizing Ruthenia. The coat of arms shield is surrounded by military motifs such as crossed banners, battle scythes, and cannon barrels, emphasizing the armed nature of the uprising. At the top of the coin is the inscription: 160TH ANNIVERSARY, and at the bottom: OF THE JANUARY UPRISING 1863. The overall composition refers to the idea of unity among nations fighting together against Tsarist Russia for freedom and independence. The obverse of the coin, in accordance with the current design, features the image of the eagle established for the emblem of the Republic of Poland, the denomination, the inscription RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA, and the year of issue.

Historical background

The January Uprising, which broke out on January 22, 1863, was the largest and longest-lasting national uprising during the partition period. It was initiated in the Kingdom of Poland as a reaction to the intensifying Russification, ruthless repression, and forced conscription into the Russian army. It had a nationwide character and gradually spread to the territories of Lithuania, Belarus, and parts of Ukraine – the former lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The uprising was mainly conducted through guerrilla warfare due to the lack of a regular army and the superiority of Russian forces. Several tens of thousands of insurgents joined the armed actions, including many representatives of the intelligentsia, clergy, and peasants. The uprising lasted until the autumn of 1864 and ended with brutal repressions: numerous executions, deportations to Siberia, confiscations of property, and intensified Russification. The Tsarist regime abolished the distinctiveness of the Kingdom of Poland, and its institutions were fully subordinated to the Russian authorities. Despite the defeat, the January Uprising played a significant role in shaping national consciousness and influenced future generations of Poles, becoming a foundation of historical memory and an inspiration for further independence aspirations.
