Coin Appearance
The obverse of the coin features a sailing ship under full sail – a reference to the maritime career of Konrad Korzeniowski. In the background of the ship, there is an outline of an open book – a reference to his writing talent. Other elements of the obverse include the national emblem, denomination (200 zł), year of minting (2007), and the legend "Rzeczpospolita Polska".
The reverse features a likeness of Konrad Korzeniowski (Joseph Conrad) with a reproduction of the author's original signature. In the legend below the portrait, we can read Joseph Conrad and further along the edge Konrad Korzeniowski. Next to the portrait, the author's birth and death dates (1857-1924) are placed.
The coin was minted in half an ounce of 0.900 fine gold. The obverse and reverse were struck with a proof stamp. The coin was released on the collector's market in a limited edition of 8,200 pieces. The available specimen is packed in a capsule, an original NBP box, and comes with a paper certificate. The coin is in mint condition.
Historical Background
Joseph Conrad, actually Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, is a world-renowned writer and publicist of Polish origin. Konrad Korzeniowski was born in 1857 into a noble Polish family from Berdychiv in Ukraine. Konrad's father was an active independence activist, supporting the November Uprising, which led to the family's land being confiscated and his father being exiled deep into Russia.
Financed by his uncle, at the age of 17, Korzeniowski traveled to Marseille, where he joined the French merchant navy. As an apprentice and steward, he visited Martinique, the Caribbean, and South America. Soon, due to financial problems, Korzeniowski emigrated to Great Britain, where he also joined the merchant navy and visited Australia. During this time, he passed exams for second officer, then first officer, and captain. Thanks to passing the exam, he obtained British citizenship.
From 1889 to 1891, he stayed deep in Africa, working as a captain for a Belgian company trading with the upper Congo. Unfortunately, the venture was not very fruitful, so after two years, Korzeniowski resigned. He continued his career for another 3 years before dedicating himself to a writing career.
Korzeniowski's travels and worldly experience were the inspiration for writing most of his works and publications. Unfortunately, the author did not write in Polish. His greatest works, such as "Heart of Darkness" and "Lord Jim", which are part of the school reading canon, were written by Conrad in English.
