The Australian Kangaroo is a coin known for its high recognizability and unique design. Its reverse changes every year, adding to its symbolic collectible value, making it an ideal investment.
The coin has a face value of 100 Australian dollars and is made of 999.9 fine gold. It represents the group of coins with the highest precious metal content ratio. Made from pure gold with virtually no impurities, it is one of the most popular products offered by the Perth Mint.
Who produces the Australian Kangaroo coin?
The Perth Mint, part of Gold Corporation, was established in Western Australia to meet the demand for refining and processing gold mined on the continent, eliminating the need to transport it to London. The corporation, founded in 1987, is state-owned and is involved in producing bullion coins, among other activities.
Gold Corporation processes most of the gold mined in Australia, as well as precious metals from Asia and Pacific countries. The Perth Mint enjoys an excellent reputation for innovation (it even produced a one-ton gold coin!) and the quality of its coins and numismatic products. The corporation also supplies many mints worldwide with plain coins (blanks), which they then stamp with their own designs and denominations.
What does the Australian Kangaroo 1 oz gold coin look like?
Produced in 1986, the coin known as the Australian Nugget was the precursor to today's Australian Kangaroo. Its design was based on the image of a gold nugget, but in 1989, the design was changed to the iconic Australian marsupial. The kangaroo is surrounded by the coin's name—Australian Kangaroo—and the year of minting, as well as the fineness and weight of the coin, which in this case is nearly equivalent to its pure gold content.
The obverse features the portrait of the reigning monarch along with their name, the name of the issuing country, and the coin's denomination.
The Australian Kangaroo is one of the very few legal tender coins whose design changes annually. This convinces many investors of its value, contributing to the popularity of this beautiful gold coin.
