Description of 1 oz Silver Coin - Crested Penguin - 24h Shipping!

The crested penguin is the first-ever premium silver bullion coin, struck by New Zealand Post in cooperation with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. As the inaugural bullion coin, the crested penguin represents an iconic species of New Zealand’s former fauna. The entire series to which this Penguin belongs focuses on species that once inhabited areas of New Zealand. Unfortunately, these species are now considered endangered or extinct.

Appearance of 1 oz Silver Coin - Crested Penguin - 24h Shipping!

The reverse of the silver coin features an image of a pair of crested penguins standing on a rock surrounded by the ocean. In the background, you can also see the New Zealand koru pattern, symbolizing the shape of an unfurling fern frond. The design is encircled by the inscription Chatman Island Crested Penguin. The reverse was designed by Dave Burkle.

The obverse of the coin shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom by Ian Rank-Broadley. The obverse also includes information about the issuing country, weight, pure silver content, and year of issue.

Historical background

The crested penguin, also known as Hoiho in the Māori language, is a penguin species characteristic of New Zealand. This rare species is found mainly on the coasts of New Zealand’s South Island and some nearby islands. Its appearance is distinguished by a unique arrangement of feathers on the head and flippers in shades of black, white, and gray, which help it camouflage among rocks and coastal vegetation. Crested penguins are known for excellent swimming and diving abilities and can travel long distances in search of food, mainly crustaceans and fish. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, pressure from predators, and other threats, the population of crested penguins is increasingly at risk of extinction, requiring special protection and monitoring.
